Infection and inflammation have been known since the ancient time of Pharos and are still with us. Furthermore, these conditions are increasing, and new conditions appear, such as the Covid-19 disease. These diseases are affecting too many humans of different ages and cost humanity lives and tremendous economic losses. Accordingly, it was thought to write this book to shed some light on the importance of this medical issue and its diagnosis effectively using different medical imaging modalities in correlation with other diagnostic methods and pathophysiology of relevant diseases. Since the diagnosis of various inflammatory and infectious diseases is not straightforward clinically, there is a need for imaging in a significant number of cases.

Furthermore, because the medical imaging field has tremendously expanded, too many modalities, including molecular imaging, are available for the diagnosis of diseases and specifically inflammatory conditions. Since the findings of infectious conditions on imaging mirror the pathophysiologic changes, it is necessary to understand clearly the pathophysiology of such diseases. This understanding is crucial to choose the proper imaging modality or modalities for each patient and effectively interpret them based on this understanding. This book dealing with such a critical and common medical condition is meant as a reference for students, trainees, researchers, and practicing physicians to facilitate understanding of the effective strategy for the diagnosis of this condition by different imaging modalities. The first chapter of the book covers necessary fundamental aspects of inflammation and infection, while the second chapter covers the diseases’ pathophysiology. The third chapter is devoted to diagnosis in general outlining clinical, laboratory, and imaging diagnosis for necessary correlation. The fourth chapter covers in detail imaging diagnosis of soft tissue infection/inflammation, while the fifth chapter deals with the imaging diagnosis of musculoskeletal infections with their different forms. The last chapter covers the problematic condition of fever and inflammation of unknown origins and the role of imaging in its diagnostic dilemma. Many tables, diagrams, and images are included to facilitate simpler benefit and quick spotting of certain facts and diagnostic algorithms. A glossary is included at the end as a quick reference for some terms.

شهد التطور الطبي ثورات في عدة مجالات وأهمها التطور المذهل في طرق التصوير الطبي  بما في ذلك التصوير الجزيئي مما يساعد على اكتشاف الأمراض وتشخيصها مبكرا ومتابعة تأثير العلاج. والأمراض الناتجة عن العدوى والالتهابات هي مجموعة هامه من تلك الأمراض وتقع أهميتها في انتشارها الواسع حول العالم رغم إنها توجد أكثر في الدول النامية. وتشخيص تلك الأمراض قد يكون صعباً اكلينيكياً وهناك حاجه في الكثير من الحالات للتصوير الطبي. 

ومن هنا جاءت فكرة هذا الكتاب الذي يهدف أن يستخدم كمرجع علمي لتشخيص أمراض العدوى والالتهاب بكافة طرق التصوير المتوفرة والحديثة. ويتضمن الكتاب جزءاً عن تعريف العدوى والالتهاب والفرق بينهما وطرق العدوى في حالة أن تكون الميكروبات هي المسبب للالتهاب. وخصص جزءاً لعرض الخصائص الباثوفيسيولوجيه للأمراض المعدية والالتهابات الهامة لكي تساعد الدارس على فهم قواعد استخدام الطرق المثالية لتصوير الأنواع المختلفة من تلك الأمراض. والجزء التالي خصص لتشخيص تلك الأمراض بصفه عامه وكيفية الوصول إلى التشخيص بالطرق المختلفة الاكلينيكية، والمعملية والتصويرية. وخصص بعد ذلك جزءاً لتشخيص الأمراض المعدية في الأنسجة الرخوه والأعضاء المختلفة بالجسم وجزءاً لتشخيص الإلتهابات بالعظام والمفاصل. وخصص آخر جزء بالكتاب لطرق التعامل مع المشكله المعقده  لتشخيص ارتفاع درجه الحرارة غير المعلوم سببه. 

يساعد هذا الكتاب الطلاب الدارسين للتخصصات الطبية والعلمية المختلفة وطلاب الدراسات العليا والاطباء المتدربين والممارسين وكذلك الباحثين حيث أنه مرجع شامل يراعي عمق لمعلومة التشخيص ومتابعة الأمراض المعدية والالتهابات بالتصوير الطبي الحديث مع مراعاة تبسيط العرض.
