Largely outdated in the references it makes, and in its language (though it – the language – is yet energetic and pleasing), the book is still a pleasing read, especially if you are the sort that finds intense pleasure in reading and is naturally attracted to anything about the subject of reading itself. The last chapter (XIV, Mental Stocktaking) is probably the best and the most likely to be the most useful – it lays out what one ought to achieve from devotion to literature and indicates how to Largely outdated in the references it makes, and in its language (though it – the language – is yet energetic and pleasing), the book is still a pleasing read, especially if you are the sort that finds intense pleasure in reading and is naturally attracted to anything about the subject of reading itself. I found Chapter IX, Verse also deeply inspiring (it kind of made me -urgently desirous of reading some poetry before [my] next meal- – to use Bennett-s own turn of phrase in another of his little gems, How to Live on 24 Hours a Day), as it could be to anyone to whom poetry is unpalatable and who dearly wished it weren-t so.Read it also to savour the charm of the English of the late Victorian era (or the Edwardian era, I don-t know – the book was first published in 1909).

This short book was referred to me by a trusted and thoughtful friend. I found this book a good mirror into why I’m not yet a “well-read” man in the realms of classic literature and all the topics, genres, authors there are to explore here. Enjoy!

جيد، فيه بعض النصائح التي يمكن إسقاطها على القارئ العربي لكن في معظمه يتحدث عن الأدب الإنجليزي وكلاسيكياته.

Bennett is delightfully opinionated, but his opinions are founded on good sense. His chief issue is that literature is treated all too often as an adjunct to life that is to be pursued after the "serious business" is taken care of, while he tries with unremitting effort to drive home the point that literature is part of the serious business of life and an indispensable core element of a life well-lived. Not everyone will be in sympathy with his view, and even fewer will heed his call, but I for Bennett is delightfully opinionated, but his opinions are founded on good sense. Not everyone will be in sympathy with his view, and even fewer will heed his call, but I for one found it very energizing, especially considering I-m currently undertaking three reading projects to do with English literature: a year-long Shakespeare project, a Christopher Marlowe project from April to October, and a year-long Dickens project.
